A Do’s and Dont’s guide for how to deal with seniors

by Lindsey Waller - 2014-10-09

DON’T

Ask what schools they are applying to: The majority of seniors don’t feel comfortable sharing the list of schools they are applying to, but it can be uncomfortable to say that when people ask multiple times.

Tell them that you are “stressed” or have “tons of work to do”: Chances are that they are busier than you (or at least they think they are). High school is hard and all Chadwick students have a lot to manage, but seniors have all been where you are and now they have to deal with college applications on top of everything else, so try to keep the stress talk to a minimum.

Ask them to stop for food on the way home: When driving a car full of people home, if everyone is begging to stop and get food, it is nearly impossible to say no. Allow them to suggest it rather than guilting them into stopping and making them get home later.

Ask if they got a lot of applications done over the summer/ how far along they are: They don’t want to talk about it! They probably did not get as much done as they wanted to or are not as far along as they would like to be, so don’t remind them.

DO

Ask how their senior year is going: This is a nice gesture, and it allows seniors to share with you what they want to.

Remember that they have a lot going on and act accordingly: If you have the opportunity to make their lives easier, take it. They will greatly appreciate all the support they can get.

Offer to be picked up at their house: It may seem like a little thing, but dropping six people off in different places every day can take a lot of extra time.

Ask for help/guidance: Seniors have been around the longest, and they know how things work. They have lots of helpful tips that they would love to share.
